A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Tribes Most Foul: Kobolds

Tribes Most Foul: Kobolds by Mike Welham is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 14-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.99 but was purchased at a greatly reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the covers, one an ad, two the front matter, one the Contents, Stat Blocks by CR and Foreword, one on Reading Stat Blocks and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one optimised for print and high-end devices the other for screen and mobile.

Tribes Most Foul: KoboldsThere are three tribes of kobolds in this supplement. Each tribe has some standard details; an introductory paragraph, society & organisation, ecology & lair, combat & tactics, notable personalities and tribal lore. Sidebars explain how to use the tribe in a campaign, give the tribe’s roster and have stat blocks of important individuals.

The first tribe is the Brightlander Kobolds. These follow a great blue wyrm and live in the desert. They are the subject of an ongoing breeding experiment, are led by a half dragon kobold who thinks she can eventually depose the dragon and have a half dragon behir.

Green Mother’s Scales follow a great green wyrm and extort travellers on her behalf. They exile any kobolds that lack green scales.

The Kobolds of the Diabolical Trap Guild, instead of moving out of their warren when the settlement above grew in size, made a deal with the thieves’ guild to make traps for them.

The PDF is well bookmarked with everything but sidebars linked. The Contents is less thorough but is hyperlinked. Navigation is excellent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a piece of black and white stock art and emblems for the three tribes.

Kobolds are known for two things; worshipping dragons and making traps. The three tribes in this supplement do not divert from this, even if the alliance with a thieves’ guild is more unusual. Though the tribes are decent, they pretty much do exactly what you’d expect a kobold tribe to do. There’s nothing wrong with the tribes; they just aren’t exceptional.
