A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Blue Pearl Grotto

Blue Pearl Grotto by Tom Stephens is a generic role playing game supplement published by New Frontier Games. This supplement is part of the Two Sheet Location series.

This is available as a Pay What You Want supplement from DriveThruRPG. It consists of a PDF and a zip file. The zip file contains a read me and two jpg maps, one showing the grotto and the upper caves, the second showing just the upper caves without a grid. The PDF has five pages and one is the front cover.

The supplement first describes the grotto and its location. The grotto is only known of by one person and is home to oysters. The o0ysters are a source of highly prized blue pearls, the only known source of such, thanks something in the environment. Some may occasionally eb found outside, but these are not as well coloured. These blue pearls are not only far more valuable than normal pearls, they enhance magic and magic items that require pearls.

Katelyn Blauvulf describes the NPC who knows of the location. She keeps the source of the pearls secret and lives in the upper caves. Katelyn is a sorceress with an affinity for life and water magic, and is actively cultivating the pearls as well as attempting to get them to grow better. Game Integration has several suggested hooks for using the cave and the pearls in the game.

A full-page labelled map of the grotto complex is then followed by descriptions of the various locations on the maps.

Blue Pearl Grotto in Review

Despite the PDF’s brevity, it is fully bookmarked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single illustration as well as the maps. Presentation is decent.

The supplement is generic, so a GM will need to come up with NPC stats and translate the details on the pearls into game terms. However, there is a lot of detail provided on these. The entire location is covered in a good level of detail, making it an interesting place with potential ways that characters can get involved.
