Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Miniquest! – Gnolls Galore

Miniquest! – Gnolls Galore is a role playing game supplement published by Campaign Creations for use with the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License with some parts considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a short adventure for characters of levels 1-5.

This is a nine page PDF that is available for free from RPGNow. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

The first page is Running a Miniquest. This explains what a miniquest is – there are different types given, leading to the impression intended to publish more, but at the time of writing this is the only one – with this being a short combat encounter. There are paragraphs on starting, running and finishing miniquests.

Miniquest! - Gnolls GaloreTwo pages are the adventure itself. The opening paragraphs state that this is aimed at a party of four characters of 1st, 3rd or 5th level. This might seem odd, but the various encounters can be scaled, and only those levels have scaling features.

The party comes across a merchant caravan and campsite that has been attacked. Following the trail from that leads to a gnoll camp. The characters may be able to save the merchant, if they have suitable equipment. Finally, there is a suggestion on how to continue the adventure afterwards.

The Appendix has stats for a single NPC, the merchant.

The final two pages have colour battlemaps of the ruined campsite and the gnoll warcamp.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and these are not really needed, given the length. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. There are no illustrations, but the two colour battlemaps mean that the supplement is decently presented.

This is a simple, two stage combat encounter, with a decent amount of skill use to get between the stages and to try and avoid the gnolls noticing the characters. The two battlemaps are a nice extra. Miniquest! – Gnolls Galore is a decent little encounter that could perhaps be dropped into a campaign, and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
