A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Mortality of Green (5E)

The Mortality of Green (5E) by Stephen Chenault is a role playing game supplement published by Troll Lord Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 4-8 characters of levels 3-5 and is also available in a version for Castles & Crusades.

The supplement is available as a 29-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $7 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

The Mortality of Green (5E)The Preface explains that this is intended to be a fast-paced adventure, where the characters have to chase after a brigand troll who has stolen an important sapling. It is set in Aihrde, but it could be moved to other worlds. There are also other hooks provided, and some encounters. It takes place in the Darkenfold Forest and characters with forestry skills are useful.

The Introduction gives some details on the forest and some of the locations and creatures, before moving onto the Castle Keeper’s information, which has details on wandering monsters and some of the motivations of various NPCs.

The adventure starts with the characters arriving at a town to find a wounded druid and most of the inhabitants fled after a bandit attack. Assuming the characters agree to help, they will then make their way to the next village, which is described in detail. What would be the centre pages of a printed book has a map of the entire area with points of interest marked. The characters are assumed to head out into the forest in pursuit of the sapling, and there are a number of encounters they could have before the final one.

Appendix A: New Monster has a single new creature.

Appendix B: New Spells has two new spells.

Appendix C: New Magic Items has two new items.

The Mortality of Green (5E) in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column black and white format and appeared to be free of errors. As well as the maps, there are some black and white illustrations, some of which appear to be custom. Presentation is decent.

This adventure is the first in the C series that explores the Darkenfold region, so there is plenty more to do after this. This particular one should be relatively easy to drop into other settings, as all that’s truly needed is a large forested region to place it. As well as the main plot, there are a few side adventures or encounters that add a bit more depth to the adventure. The characters, though doing a straightforward chase, do not necessarily need to proceed in a specific manner, though there is a definite start and end point, in finding the sapling stolen and recovering it. The Mortality of Green (5E) is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
