A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Peran

Peran by Alun Rees is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster.

The supplement is available as an eight-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

The opening paragraphs explain that Peran is a wilderness in northwestern Hârn. Khuzan and Corani ruins dot the area and Ivashu are common. The Kubora and Urba tribes defend the region against invaders.

PeranHistory explains that the Kubora and Urdu moved into the area, which back then still had Khuzan present. Foulspawn swarmed the region after the fall of Lothrim. The Corani then moved into the area, but the destruction of the legion fort at Kustan marked their withdrawal. In the modern era, Peran is popular with animal collectors, trappers, fur traders and those looking for rare herbs. The Warriors of Mameka have moved into the region and the Red Shadows of Herpa want to launch a crusade against the Kubora.

Geography and Climate gives details of both, with a map of the area and an overview of the five natural regions, and a sidebar mentions the Tawedog, or Old Ones of the Forest; an elusive sentient species.

The Northern Coastal Plain describes this region, with a sidebar having an encounter table and details of the Urdu Oath Ground.

The Western Highlands is similar, and again a sidebar has an encounter table, along with the tradition that Kustan is the burial mound of Kemlar.

The River Valleys gives another overview, with a sidebar having an encounter table and details of the Scarlet Ribbon, what remains of the Corani road.

The Broken Lands again gives an overview, with the sidebar having another encounter table and the legend of the Fallen God.

The Rayesha Foothills covers the last region, with the sidebar having an encounter table and details of the ruins of Fort Mejetus.

Peran in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text follows either a two column or single column with sidebar format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of black and white and colour images. Presentation is okay.

This supplement gives an overview of a large region of Hârn, though not in any great detail; there are plenty of areas that could be expanded, and are in other supplements. There are no HârnMaster stats, making it comparatively easy to use with other systems. Even the encounter tables only list what’s encountered; purely Hârn creatures will likely need changing, and it does reference general encounter tables. Peran is a useful base supplement covering an area of Hârn and it can be found by clicking here.
