A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Le Loup Solitaire (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Le Loup Solitaire (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs for the Tarnished Souk of the Coliseum Morpheuon setting

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Le Loup Solitaire (PFRPG)The supplement is available as a ten-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two are ads.

Le Loup Solitaire gives some background on the NPC, who was sold into slavery and now wages war against the Khan and slavers. How the setting’s Dreamburning affects Le Loup Solitaire is next, followed by various pieces of lore that characters could know about him. A sidebar gives some suggestions on how to use them in the setting.

The three different versions are next, from high to low CR. The CR 6 version is a half-orc fighter 3/rogue 4; a pretty standard NPC with nothing particularly special. The CR 13 version is an inflicted werewolf half-orc fighter 7/rogue 6. This one is a bit different, as the NPC is now a werewolf and has humanoid and hybrid form stat blocks.

Finally, the CR 21 version is a natural werewolf pack lord half-orc fighter 8/rogue 11. This one again has two stat blocks, new custom items described and new abilities.

Pack Lord Template is a new template that can only be gained by afflicted lycanthropes.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Le Loup Solitaire (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections linked. The text maintains a two-column black and white layout that appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of black and white illustrations; the one from the cover that is custom and an interior one that may not be. Presentation is decent.

Unlike some of the other supplements in this series, this NPC looks like they can evolve from one CR to the next. For some, they appeared to be completely different characters. The three CRs are still different enough that they could be used as different characters, with a name change. This is one of the better NPCs in the series.
