A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Dread Captain Miraxa, Queen Corsair of the Slumbering Sea (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Dread Captain Miraxa, Queen Corsair of the Slumbering Sea (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two pages are ads.

Dread Captain Miraxa, Queen Corsair of the Slumbering Sea gives some background on the NPC; after her father’s merchant fleet was destroyed, she decided that weakness had a cost and became a pirate. She is now a very dangerous one. This also covers Dreamburning – Miraxa has a motivation that is rather more noble than she might appear – lore and how to use her.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Dread Captain Miraxa, Queen Corsair of the Slumbering Sea (PFRPG)The three different versions follow, arranged in the book from high to low CR.

The CR 7 version is a horrifically overpowered sea-born draken fighter 5.

The CR 14 version is a horrifically overpowered sea-born draken fighter 10.

The CR 21 version is a horrifically overpowered sea-born draken fighter 15.

Impending Doom is the CR 21 version’s mithril-plated iron dreadnaught; a ship to flee if ever there was one.

Draken is a new race, born from half-dragon and humanoid interbreeding until they bred true. There are some alternate racial traits for draken and relevant feats.

Archetypes has a number of new archetypes.

Other Feats has some from Horrifically Overpowered Feats.

Traits has some new traits.

Finally, there are new magic items.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Dread Captain Miraxa, Queen Corsair of the Slumbering Sea (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. Apart from the custom cover illustration, there are some stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.

Like the previous NPC in this series, this again uses Horrifically Overpowered Feats making Miraxa, well, potentially horrific. These grant her additional archetypes and many of the abilities of different classes without needing to have those classes; for example, the CR 21 version has the abilities of a 7th level rogue with archetype, a 3rd level barbarian with archetype and the spellcasting ability of a 7th level oracle. This makes her much, much more dangerous than she would appear from class levels. Miraxa is a truly dangerous individual at high levels, with a dangerous ship and a weapon that can crush ship’s keels. Not to be underestimated – but she may also need help.
