Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Greenwood Outlaws – Tools of the Trade

Greenwood Outlaws – Tools of the Trade by Łukasz Kołodziej is a role playing game supplement published by Skavenloft for use with Greenwood Outlaws. The supplement is covered by the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Unported license.

The supplement is available for free as an 11-page PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Contents.

Greenwood Outlaws - Tools of the TradeThe Foreword explains that Prince Rupert – the villain of Greenwood Outlaws – is cruel and ruthless and has numerous and well-armed servants. This supplement contains a variety of items that can be used by characters to fight his tyranny, and each is associated with an unusual character, place or phenomenon. A note explains that most of the items are magical and this should be paid heed to before including them in a game. Too many may devalue them as well as increasing the supernatural element.

The items then follow. There are six in each category. These are Blades, Arrows, Bombs, Cloaks, Boots and Bags. In each case, there is some introductory text about the type of items; some are made by specific individuals and they are described, whilst others are made by various people for various purposes. Each of the six items has a description, and some of them also have names. Though the items may be magical, given that these are intended for a Forged in the Dark game, they have descriptions as to what the items do rather than stats or crunch.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though comparatively short, there are enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Contents covers the main sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

The supplement does what it says it does; adds a variety of new items to a Greenwood Outlaws game. As stated, how the items are added should be considered by the GM; if they are added too frequently, a low-magic game could quickly become a lot more magical. In particular, some items are single use whilst others are permanent. Single use items make less of a difference to the long-term game unless they are regularly added, whilst permanent items remain until something happens to them and they have a greater long-term effect. Greenwood Outlaws – Tools of the Trade is a useful collection of gear and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
