Dungeon Crawl Classics #93: Moon-Slaves of the Cannibal Kingdom by Edgar Johnson is a role playing game supplement published by Goodman Games for use with Dungeon Crawl Classics. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for level 2 characters.
The supplement is available as a 28-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $6.99 and is also available in printed form from sites such as Amazon. The PDF is the version reviewed although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one page is the front matter, half a page is the Open Game License and one page is ads.
The Introduction explains the adventure is aimed at six 2nd level characters, but may prove deadly if care isn’t taken. Characters can be supplemented with hirelings. This is a jungle/ruin based hexcrawl.
Background explains that the Tolomak Islands are ruled by three sisters; two of whom definitely do not get along with each other.
Judges Notes gives the major areas of the island, stats for the three sisters, random encounters, minions and allies of each sister, the effect the moon cycle has, the possibility that the characters’ ship might choose to sail away, how to use 0-level hirelings and the presence of gold.
Beginning the Adventure has several different themes that can be used to run it and how to move around the island. This is followed by the player start.
The islands are divided into five different areas. There are two main islands, a caldera with an island, a subterranean area and an area of sunken ruins. The sunken ruins are not described at all, stated as being due to a lack of space. Instead, an extensive list of modules that could be placed there is given, with notes on how to make them fit. DCC #66.5, DCC #67, DCC #68, DCC #75, DCC #77, DCC #82 and DCC #90 from Goodman Games are suggested, along with the third-party adventures In the Prison of the Squid Sorcerer, Attack of the Frawgs, The Haunting of Larvik Island and Lair of the Mist Men.
Finally, there is a Supplemental Bestiary of monsters.
There are four pages of maps, including a player map inside the front cover.
Dungeon Crawl Classics #93: Moon-Slaves of the Cannibal Kingdom in Review
The PDF is bookmarked but with only the major sections linked. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column black and white format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour illustrations, all of which appear to be custom, up to full page in size. Presentation is good.
In many respects, this adventure feels very similar to The Isle of Dread. It has an island of strange creatures, various different reasons for going there, hexcrawl with set locations and random encounters and perhaps different adventures that can be had. The main difference is that there is a potential overriding plot, but it otherwise feels very similar in style. Though the characters do have the potential to accidentally blow up a chunk of the island. Dungeon Crawl Classics #93: Moon-Slaves of the Cannibal Kingdom is an interesting adventure that seems to hail back to some of the earlier pulp adventures and it can be found by clicking here.
