Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Brukesian Duchy Hexcrawl – OSR Freebie

Brukesian Duchy Hexcrawl – OSR Freebie by Derek Ruiz is a role playing game supplement published by Elven Tower Cartography. Though the supplement is described as being system neutral, it is still covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a sample of the full Brukesian Duchy Hexcrawl.

Brukesian Duchy Hexcrawl - OSR FreebieThe supplement is available as a 21-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and Open Game License, one the Table of Contents and one an ad. There is also a zip file with nine versions across three colour maps.

The Brukesian Duchy explains how to use the supplement. This is a border duchy far from the centres of power and should be easy enough to drop into similar borderland regions. There are details on the duke and the six human noble families as well as on the Dewborn Princes, strange fey from another realm that live in the forest. A strange disease that causes people to walk around on a 28-day journey is covered and brief details on two other intelligent species, pigmen and myconids. Various important locations are then briefly covered.

Next is Travel Procedure for travelling through a hex, including a weather table, camp mishaps, travel mishaps and rules on foraging. Following this are tables for random events.

Two hexes are detailed fully. Each has a map showing their comparative location, a map of the location, an overview, more tables and then a bigger description. Various points of interest are also covered along with associated NPCs.

The PDF is bookmarked but only the more important sections are linked. The Table of Contents is to a similar level of depth and hyperlinked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a three-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are various colour and black and white illustrations, which look like they may be stock, and the colour custom maps. Presentation is decent.

This is a sampler product for the full supplement and it does give a good idea as to what the full version contains, which is a lot more hexes. The two described hexes are both covered in a decent level of detail, featuring a city and a dungeon. Though stats will need adding, monsters are given familiar enough names that this should be comparatively easy. As is, this supplement could be taken apart for the hexes and tables or have the rest of the map fleshed out by a GM, making it quite useful on its own, though the full version will be better. Brukesian Duchy Hexcrawl – OSR Freebie is a decent little supplement and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
