A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Weekly Wonders – From the Bags of Giants Volume II

Weekly Wonders – From the Bags of Giants Volume II by Alex Riggs and Joshua Zaback is a role playing game supplement published by Necromancers of the Northwest for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a sequel to Weekly Wonders – From the Bags of Giants.

This is a 13 page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at a greatly reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one page is the Credits and front matter and one page is the Open Game License.

Weekly Wonders - From the Bags of Giants Volume IIFirst up are four d100 tables, one each for desert, stone, storm and taiga giants. Each table has 100 unique results for items that could be found in a bag for that type of giant, ranging from the magical to the valuable to the odd to the junk. Although some results are more generic, many are thematically appropriate to the giant type.

The second part of the supplement is four different new magic items. Again, each is thematically appropriate for one type of giant. For the storm giant, there is the crown of storms, which allows the wearer – and the crown adjusts to fit – limited control over the weather, namely creating strong winds around them once per day and calling lightning during a thunderstorm and, once per week, creating a storm of vengeance effect.

For the desert giant, there is fire water, a liquid that gives the imbiber the benefit of an endure elements spell, has their body flooded with an intense heat that burns attackers with natural weapons or melee weapons lacking reach and can breathe a cone of flame.

The taiga giant has spirit mead, which grants the imbiber visions of the past giving a bonus to Knowledge checks, can gain the benefit of a legend lore spell and can also ask an ancestor a question which must be answered truthfully.

Finally, for the stone giant, there is the stone of sure flight, a throwing rock that is lightweight enough for Medium creatures to use, cannot be caught, are not destroyed on a successful attack and can, once per day, hit without need for an attack roll.

Weekly Wonders – From the Bags of Giants Volume II in Review

Despite its length, the PDF is thoroughly bookmarked. Navigation is very good. The text maintains a two column full colour format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a handful of stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

The most interesting part of the supplement is the d100 tables. There are a wide range of different things to find, and they needn’t be limited to a giant’s sack – although a Large riding dog isn’t something you would expect to find in another creature’s possessions. Or, for that matter, in a sack. Most of the items are interesting in some way, even if it’s only as weird junk.

The magic items are a bit variable. The crown of storms is the least interesting of these and the two draughts are far more unique. The stone of sure flight is the cheapest of the items, but it also seems overpowered and underpriced. A stone that is guaranteed to do 5d6 plus twice the thrower’s Strength modifier once per day, and never get used up. seems like it should be worth more than 5,000 gp. Against lower level enemies, it has a good chance of insta-killing them with no save. This supplement is definitely an improvement over the first one though.. Weekly Wonders – From the Bags of Giants Volume II has some interesting material in it and it can be found by clicking here.
