A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Urban Locale #21: City Gates

Urban Locale #21: City Gates by Christopher Broadhurst is a generic role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press.

The supplement is available as a 7-page PDF for $1.75 from DriveThruRPG but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. The supplement comes in two versions, a plaintext file and a PDF. Two pages of the PDF are the front and rear covers, two pages are ads and about half a page is the front matter and Contents.

Urban Locale #21: City GatesUsing this Urban Locale is a standard piece explaining how to use the lists and what each list covers. This is followed by a brief paragraph on city gates, then the d10 lists.

1: The City Gate has names and descriptions of gates, which can determine where they need to be places.

2: Major Locale Features has ten more significant features, which can include guards.

3: Minor Locale Features are minor pieces of dressing.

4: What’s Going On is what may be happening.

5: Other Folk names and gives alignment, sex and species, along with a brief description, a number of NPCs who can be encountered.

6: What’s for Sale? has various items and prices that can be found on sale at the gate.

Urban Locale #21: City Gates in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the various sections linked. The Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This supplement enables a location, a city gate in this instance, to be rolled up quickly to make it more interesting, along with various potential interactions and things to see. Not every feature can be used with every gate, and not every gate can be used with every city, or at every location in the city, due to terrain features. Urban Locale #21: City Gates is a useful little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
