Urban Dressing: Shrines

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Urban Dressing: Shrines

Urban Dressing: Shrines by Brian Liberge is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 14-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.45 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, four the front matter, Contents and Foreword and one is the Open Game License and ads. The PDF comes in two versions, one designed for print and high-end devices, the other for mobile and low-end devices.

Urban Dressing: ShrinesThe Foreword briefly talks about this being a natural complement for Urban Dressing: Temples and that cemeteries and graveyards will be next.

A: Characteristics and Appearance starts with a short d20 table for determining whether a shrine is personal, which are small and often found in a home or business, public, which are small to large shrines accessible by the general population, and major, which are grander and often the destination of pilgrimages. Following this are three d100 tables for each category to describe its appearance; none have 100 results but the larger shrines have more.

B: Object of Veneration is a d100 table of what the shrine contains; the holy object.

C: Hooks, Complications and Opportunities is a d20 table of adventure hooks.

D: NPCs is a d20 table of shrine keepers. Each is given a name, alignment, class and level, appearance, personality, mannerisms and hooks.

Urban Dressing: Shrines in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Contents is less thorough and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are several stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.

This is a useful little supplement that can be used to create many different shrines to be found in many places, whether these be just a simple piece of setting dressing, or a place of greater importance, possibly with attached adventure hooks. With a bit of work, they could also be customised for a specific setting. Urban Dressing: Shrines is a decent little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
