The Gods Left It Behind

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Gods Left It Behind

The Gods Left It Behind by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 19 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three pages are the front matter and three are the Open Game License.

The Gods Left It BehindThe opening paragraphs explain that archaeologists on Eniran – though it isn’t stated, the adventure is in the Frontiers of Space setting – have followed up legends about a floating castle and have discovered that it does exist. The characters are hired to explore it.

Complications are problems that could occur; for once the patron isn’t holding things back, though they can still cause problems.

The Other Team has stats for a competing party of explorers, plus how to determine when they arrive.

The Patron describes the person hiring the characters.

Key to the Islands in the Clouds describes the various locations.

Artifacts has some suggestions as to valuing the artefacts should the characters choose not to sell them to their patron.

Keys to Success are what’s needed for successful completion.

Expanding the Adventure considers what might happen if the characters choose to use the interstellar sailing ship found; Space 1999 and Lost in Space are potential outcomes.

Finally, there is a map of the castle.

The Gods Left It Behind in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and a number of minor errors were noticed; the largest being that the front matters calls this Castle of the Gods. Apart from the map, there are no illustrations.

This adventure seems to have more than a few similarities to Islands in the Sky; both involve exploring ancient floating structures. It should be relatively easy to place the adventure in other settings. Perhaps the biggest problem is it’s possible to make the adventure impossible to complete, if certain things are damaged; it might be an idea to work around that.
