Slime Cave of Norwal

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Slime Cave of Norwal

Slime Cave of Norwal by James Introcaso is a role playing game supplement published by Jeff C. Stevens for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 12 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the Introduction, front matter and an ad, one page is ads and one page is an ad and the Open Game License. There are also two PNG maps, one labelled, one not.

Slime Cave of NorwalThe Introduction explains that this was written for the Kickstarter for Adventures from the Potbellied Kobold. It can be run using the basic monsters but also ones from Tome of Beasts and Creature Codex; these are not required as it can be run without them.

The opening paragraphs explain that this is an adventure aimed at five 4th-level characters, but scaling options are provided for running it with characters of level 1, 2, 3 and 5.

The Background explains that the village of Norwal gets some tourists who come to view the ruins of a wizard’s tower and the Slime Cave. Said caves have been invaded by cultists of the god of oozes who intends to summon the demon lord. Several Plot Hooks are provided to bring characters in.

Descriptive Bullet Points explains that the adventure uses bullet points rather than descriptive boxes. Some can be read out to characters; others are for the DM. There’s a brief description of the village and the most important locations. The characters will need to track the oozes attacking the village back to their lair and stop the cultists from summoning the ooze god – which will devour the world. That bit should probably be ignored.

Developments has some suggestions for further adventures.

Slime Cave of Norwal in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, has enough content that they would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column full colour format with colour illustrations up to full page in size, as well as the colour maps. Presentation is excellent.

This is a decent little side adventure – as long as the part where failure destroys the world is ignored – that should be easy enough to drop into any suitable campaign or setting. All that’s needed is some spot to drop in a village. The ooze god, Slugidor, could quite easily be replaced with Jubilex, that more famous demon lord of oozes. Slime Cave of Norwal is a nice adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
