A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Pages from the Lost Grimoire – Earthly Treasures / Enshrined in Stone

Pages from the Lost Grimoire – Earthly Treasures / Enshrined in Stone by Dan Coleman is a role playing game supplements published by Dan Coleman Productions for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License with some parts considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is the second in a series of supplements that contain different material. This supplement contains some new magic items and a mini-adventure that can be played to obtain one or more of them.

The supplement is available from RPGNow as a Pay What You Want supplement as the series is funded by Patreon. This includes a nine page PDF, with one page being the front cover, one the front matter, one a page of thanks and two pages being the Open Game License. Also included are five png maps. One of these is the GM’s map and the other four are variants, one before an event and one after, each of these coming in versions with and without a grid.

Pages from the Lost Grimoire - Earthly Treasures / Enshrined in StoneOne page has the new magic items, four in total, all connected to the earth in some way. There is a weapon, crystal blade, suitable for any type of blade, which causes the blade to shatter into a cloud of sharp crystals that whirl around the user and cause damage to any that approach until the blade reforms. Interesting, but perhaps a bit limited.

Next is a staff, staff of the underground, that has a number of different spell abilities. Spells in a can, with the addition of being able to create stalagmites, detect how far underground the user is and the shortest and most direct route to the surface. A bit bland.

The stone of burden or loadstone is a cursed item that is not actually new. This is simply the stone of weight, a very old item that adds weight to the user. Not a great addition.

Finally, the stonewrought choker causes the wearer’s skin to become hard as stone and gives added protection against acid as well as granting darkvision or increasing its range. More interesting.

Enshrined in Stone is the actual adventure and it’s suggested that one of the rewards for completing it be one of the new magic items. Probably not the cursed item. This has a trap and a combat encounter and is intended for 5-6th level characters. It starts with a grid showing the lethality of the encounter based on the average party level and number of characters, which is useful, and there are suggestions on how to use it depending on how dangerous it is.

Pages from the Lost Grimoire – Earthly Treasures / Enshrined in Stone in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and they are not truly necessary for a supplement of this length but they would have been appreciated.

The text maintains a two column format with background and no errors were noticed. There are the maps for the mini-adventure and three of the magic items have illustrations, which is good. Sadly, the illustrations for the items are combined, rather than being separate, which is annoying. Presentation is pretty good.

The magic items are somewhat variable. There is a staff that is largely spells in a can and a duplicated very old one, leaving only two that are really interesting. The main feature of the supplement is the mini-adventure, which can be used as a single encounter or as part of a series.

Pages from the Lost Grimoire – Earthly Treasures / Enshrined in Stone is decent enough and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
