A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Nothing but the Wind: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario
Nothing but the Wind: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario by JP Stephens is a role playing game published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The supplement is available as a 17 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Table of Contents.
The Introduction explains that the adventure is set in North America during the Dark Ages. A party of Vikings is investigating rumours of something preying on nearby villages. Villagers have been disappearing for months, first random hunters then children from their beds. The party of four Vikings arrive at Howling Rock. Vikings have been expanding their territory, which had been going well until now. It’s explained for the Keeper what the current threat is. The structure of the scenario, which is set over three days, is covered, followed by some Mythic Iceland skills.
Start: Day One has the characters arrive at the nearly dead village of Howling Rock. There are various checks the characters can perform to learn more, a map of the village and some details on the three villagers still living in the place.
Day Two has potential side-effects affect some characters, and the possibility of looking for the Wendigo said to be terrorising the place.
Day Three is the final confrontation.
Epilogue has rewards for any survivors.
Adversaries gives stats for the enemies and the final eight pages are pre-generated characters.
Nothing but the Wind: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed though they would have been appreciated. The Table of Contents covers the major and minor sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the colour village map, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.
This is a short and simple, though given the system, still potentially very dangerous, scenario. It is probably best served used as a one-shot, given its time period and location, and the fact that it could be played in one session, though it could still be possible to integrate it into a campaign.
