Mini Quest: Rise of the Vampire

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Mini Quest: Rise of the Vampire

Mini Quest: Rise of the Vampire by David Dudka is a role playing game supplement published by Survive RPG for use with Dungeons & Dragons-based systems, although no particular edition is specified. This is an adventure in the Mini Quest series for low-level characters, 3rd level at most.

This is a two page Pay What You Want PDF that is available from RPGNow.

The characters will be stopped in their travels by the servant of a local nobleman; the nobleman in question requires their help. It seems that his daughter fell ill, died and then rose as a vampire. A cleric was called in to help, but the vampire killed him.

Mini Quest: Rise of the VampireThe nobleman wants the characters to go to the cemetery, enter the family crypt, find the coffin his daughter is in, and slay her. The cleric injured the vampire enough that she became gaseous, and it is currently daytime, so the party has until sundown to kill her before she is restored to full unhealth. The vampire does not confront the characters directly, due to her being indisposed, instead summoning creatures to use against them.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at two pages, does not need them. The text maintains a two column format and a few minor errors were noticed. There are a number of custom black and white illustrations; presentation is very good for a two page supplement.

Within the cemetery, characters will gain a blessing from the (unnamed) goddess of death as long as they do not pillage the tombs. If they do – and, given players, this is quite likely – the blessing becomes a curse.

A vampire might seem to be too dangerous a creature for 3rd or lower level characters to deal with, and it is, but with the vampire being wounded and not up for a fight, this makes it easier. Higher level characters would not be as concerned. It is actually unusual for supplements in this series to have recommended levels stated.

There is a potential hook at the end of the adventure, although it is not elaborated on. The vampire daughter also asks to speak rather than be killed – it’s assumed that characters will not listen. The GM will have to make something up if his players are less bloodthirsty.

Mini Quest: Rise of the Vampire is a decent side quest and it can be checked out for free by clicking here.
