A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Items of the Stars

Items of the Stars by Jonathon Wright is a generic role playing game supplement published by Pink Dice Bag Publishing.

This is a six-page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at the reduced price of $1 during a sale. Two pages are the front and rear covers and one is the front matter, Credits and a brief Introduction.

Items of the StarsThere are five magic items in total, most of which have some in-character text and then the description. The first is the Star-Forged Blade, which is made from meteorites. These blades are very light and are said to feel more like holding a dagger. A d8 table provides some possible histories.

The Belt of the Shattered Star is made from crystals of dead stars, and can defends against 10 attacks, taking damage before the wearer, after which it needs to be recharged.

The Ring of Starsight is a ring whose stone is the still-beating heart of a dead star, inside which is a star-spirit. The star-spirits are a useful source of knowledge. There is a d4 table of ring personalities.

The Starpool Bowl, when filled with water, always shows an image of the stars as they would be in the current position, even if the bowl is underground.

Finally, the Star-forged Honour Shield is a large shield that bears three different coloured symbols. One cloaks the bearer in flame, another strengthens the defence of allies and the third heals the wounds of allies.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column two-colour format and a number of errors were noticed. There are illustrations for three of the items, two black and white and one colour, presumably stock. Illustrations for all would have been nice. The covers are also colour. Presentation is okay.

With this being a generic supplement, the listed powers for the items are necessarily vague. A GM will need to translate these into appropriate ones for the game systems. This may be easier for some of the items rather than others. How interesting each item is does vary; the Star-Forged Blade, for example, seems to only have the power of weighing less. Not spectacular. The most varied powers come from the Star-forged Shield. Overall, this is a variable bunch of items that will need extra work. Items of the Stars is an okay collection of magic items and it can be found by clicking here.
