A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Dragon Drop Supplements: Atmos Vale

Dragon Drop Supplements: Atmos Vale by Robert Marriner-Dodds is a role playing game supplement published by Dragon Turtle Games for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License with some parts being considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a Pay What You Want PDF from RPGNow. This is a nine page bookmarked PDF, with one page being the front cover, one the Contents and front matter and one page the Open Game License.

Atmos Vale is a small town, or possibly a village depending on the setting, that is involved in the adventure Of Worgs & Goblins, also from Dragon Turtle Games.

The first page gives a brief history of the settlement, its size, food sources and religion, followed by a list of Important NPCs. Each NPC has their name and location and, where relevant, the fact that they are involved in Of Worgs & Goblins.

Places of Interest takes up most of the rest of the supplement, with a single page being a labelled map. The various locations associated with the previously mentioned NPCs are detailed, including an apothecary, smithy, village shop and wizard’s tower. Each has a decent description and some also have miniquests associated with them (or the main adventure) and the inn is a source of rumours.

Dragon Drop Supplements: Atmos Vale in Review

The PDF might be bookmarked but it isn’t very well bookmarked – the only bookmarks lead to the cover and Contents. The Contents page only lists the major sections. Navigation could therefore be a lot better.

The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. The sole illustration is the map, which is also used as part of the front cover. The pages have a coloured background which unfortunately cannot be disabled, so printing will be a nuisance.

The supplement may be aimed at D&D 5E but there are absolutely no game stats given and only a brief reference to a single item in the Player’s Handbook. Consequently, it is actually more system agnostic than might be thought and can be used with other systems comparatively easily, as whichever system it is used with will require stats creating.

Atmos Vale is also quite a small trading settlement and it should be comparatively easy to drop it into any world setting. All that’s really needed is a river to site it on.

The addition of the miniquests, which may require a little development and fleshing out to use, is also useful, although they are more like extensive adventure hooks than complete adventures.

At the suggested price of $4.99, this supplement would probably be a bit pricey. However, it is Pay What You Want, so you can pay what you think it is worth, and it is definitely worth more than nothing – perhaps a couple of dollars or so.
