A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Care Forgot

Care Forgot by John Almack is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

The supplement is available as a six page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

The Introduction explains that this is a 1920s scenario set in New Orleans. It is designed for a single character, whose stats are provided, but that it should be possible to adapt it to more players. This also references The Grand Grimoire of Cthulhu Mythos Magic for spells.

Care ForgotThe single investigator awoke nearly a month ago after a thunderstorm with amnesia, though soon learned her name, where she lives and who with, and that she has a fiancée. The information available to the Keeper goes into more detail, for the investigator is lacking more knowledge than she thinks. This means that the Keeper will do rolls for skills that the investigator does not knowingly possess.

The adventure itself consists of a series of encounters that take place over a week. There are visitors who could help with recovering her memory, and others she may visit to find out more, as well as certain events that reveal information. The investigator must learn out what happened to her by the end of the week, or a predator will attempt to devour her; this will be hampered should her actions get her committed to an asylum.

The remaining three pages contain stats for the predator, the investigator and various supporting characters.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two column, two colour format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of stock black and white images. Presentation is okay.

Without disclosing too much, there is an interesting twist to the adventure. Things are not entirely what they seem, and the investigator’s player will need to find out what is really going on, and they have a limited amount of game time to do so. Once the twist is discovered, the investigator will probably be able to move forward faster, as they will then know what is really going on. Care Forgot is an interesting little scenario, best suited for a one-shot with one person, and it can be found by clicking here.
