Breaking Hearts - A Valentine's Day Adventure

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Breaking Hearts – A Valentine’s Day Adventure

Breaking Hearts – A Valentine’s Day Adventure by Dan Coleman is a role playing game supplement published by Dan Coleman Productions for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This a Valentine’s-themed adventure for four to six characters of level 3-5.

The supplement is available as a Pay What You Want PDF from RPGNow and has six pages, of which two are the Open Game License. There is also a png file, a side view map of Heartplunge Cavern, which is in the shape of a heart (an actual heart, rather than the more typically used heart shape).

Breaking Hearts - A Valentine's Day AdventureThe adventure involves a succubus who is abducting couples in order to perform a ritual. What the ritual is and where the couples come from is up to the GM. The adventure deals solely with the cavern where the succubus, her minions and a heart dragon lair. This is a simple case of exploring the dungeon and dealing with any foes.

The succubus’ minions are kulpids, a new monster. Kulpids are fiendish creatures transformed from kobolds, who can fire an arrow that can cause a target to be charmed by the next individual they see that they would normally be attracted to. The heart dragon is another new creature, with a number of abilities and a breath weapon related to charming other creatures.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at its length, does not really need them. Navigation is okay.

The text maintains a two column colour format and is almost error-free. There is a colour illustration of a kulpid and a GM’s map of the cavern, also in colour. Together with the player’s map of the cavern, presentation is very good for a small supplement.

There is quite a bit of content for the length of the supplement – a mini-dungeon and two new monsters. The adventure itself is straightforward enough, but that doesn’t mean it is safe, with fiends and a dragon. The adventure manages to keep within a Valentine’s Day theme, yet not be typical to it. There are ‘cupids,’ references to hearts and couples in love but it isn’t stereotypical. Breaking Hearts – A Valentine’s Day Adventure is a nice little adventure that can be checked out for free by clicking here.
