Ohunkakan: The Living Myths

Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Ohunkakan: The Living Myths

Ohunkakan: The Living Myths by Alina Pete and Anthony Pastores is a free role playing game supplement published by Monte Cook Games for use with Cypher System and The Strange and it requires The Strange Corebook to use.

The supplement is available as a six-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

Ohunkakan: The Living MythsThe opening paragraphs give a description of Ohunkakan, how the old stories still live there and how first time recursors arrive in the recursion.

Spirits and Elder Spirits gives an overview of the major spirits of the land. Sidebars give the recursion’s attributes and what a recursor knows about it.

Storytelling looks at this strange type of magic practiced in the recursion, which is that of telling tales.

A Fractured Landscape explains that the Thunderer and the Horned Serpent have been at war since time began and gives some details on the effects of this on the landscape, as well as details on the two spirits.

Ohunkakan Artefacts has two new artefacts for the recursion. A sidebar has two adventure hooks.

Double Face is a new creature, following the standard Cypher System layout with stats, interactions, GM Intrusions and an example of in-game use.

Ohunkakan: The Living Myths in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. In addition, there are many internal hyperlinks within the sidebars. Navigation is good. The text primarily maintains a two columns with sidebar format and appeared to be free of errors. The sidebars are used for additional details, game stats, internal links and references to other material. There is a single half-page illustration. Presentation is decent.

Ohunkakan is one of the recursions that was originally covered in Chapter 15: Other Recursions of the core rulebook. This is an expansion of that description, adding more depth to the recursion, which makes it easier to use. Sadly, this appears to be the only supplement which expands any of the original recursions other than Ruk and Ardeyn, because it is quite useful.
