Scratch Builder Monthly May 2026 is a supplement written and published by MJ Hobby Corner for use with making cheap models, primarily for tabletop wargaming.
The supplement is available as a 44-page PDF from Wargame Vault. One page is the front cover and one the Table of Contents.
Introduction: Wooden Clothespins explains that the models in the month are 6mm to 10mm scale, building ground vehicles, air support and infantry from wooden clothespins, tiny seed beads and plastic canvas mesh, discussing how all three can be used and their costs.
Craft Discussions starts by looking at wooden clothes pins, the shapes that can be cut from them and different kinds of vehicles that can be made, and how the game the models are being created for need to steer design. It then looks at the tools and materials used in the included builds, using the aforementioned clothes pins, plastic mesh and seed beads, as well as buttons, heishi beads and paperclips.
Project of the Month has instructions for building the projects. These are jet pack troops, flight stands, attack speeders and an armoured scout vehicle. Finally, there are some finishing thoughts on the subject.
Work Bench News has photos of various other upcoming projects and an upgrade on an older walker design.
Scratch Builder Monthly May 2026 in Review
The PDF is extensively bookmarked with major and minor sections linked, though nesting could be better. The Table of Contents covers the major sections. Navigation is good. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of photos of tolls, materials and the various stages of projects from started to finished. Presentation is good.
This supplement is intended for use with crafters creating cheap things for tabletop wargaming, using inexpensive, or sometimes outright free, products, and it does manage this nicely. Though such things could be bought or 3D printed, such isn’t possible or even wanted to be done by everyone, and this fills a gap. Though this particular issue is only really useful for those working in a very small scale, some of the concepts would probably be transferrable to large ones.
