Vathak 5e Adventures - Frozen Legacy

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Vathak 5e Adventures – Frozen Legacy

Vathak 5e Adventures – Frozen Legacy by Rick Hershey is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 5th level characters in the Shadows Over Vathak setting.

The supplement is available as an 11-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

Vathak 5e Adventures - Frozen LegacyThe Adventure Primer explains that in the Negoiulath Mountains is the tomb of a dwarven lord constructed above a former silver mine. The tomb’s location and some adventure hooks are given, as well as a small sidebar on the mountains. Running this Adventure and Abbreviations explains what’s needed and how material is laid out. A sidebar gives some details on the Shadows over Vathak setting.

Beginning the Adventure has the suggested fixed conditions in the tomb, due to the cold and ice.

The Icy Tomb describes the tomb itself, detailing the various locations. Two new magic items that can be found in the tomb are detailed at the end.

Appendix has a single new monster.

The final page of content has a map of the tomb.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single colour illustration, as well as the colour map. Presentation is okay.

The supplement has been adapted from the Fat Goblin Travel Guide To The Frozen Tomb of the Dwarf Lord, which has been converted to 5th Edition and altered to take place in Vathak. As such, it should be relatively simple to remove the Vathak references and drop it into other settings, as all that’s really needed to use the adventure is some mountains that are cold. This makes it, like the original supplement, more generally useful. There are effectively a number of new rules for handling the cold in the tomb, as well as a new contact poison. Vathak 5e Adventures – Frozen Legacy is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
