The Innkeeper’s Ledger: Fantasy Business Operations is a role playing game supplement written and published by Grey Wolf Writes.
The supplement is available as a 16 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG.
The opening paragraph explains that the rules provide a framework for characters running an inn in the lower quarter of a city.
Chapter 1: Property and Furnishings has the starting facilities for an inn and an upgrade system from tier 0 to tier 3, with the investment, required outfitting and business benchmarks.
Chapter 2: The Monthly Business Loop has rules for tracking the progress once per month. with a table to simulate a month of commerce and the overhead.
Chapter 3: Personnel and Operations has details on three different staff members who can be hired, each establishment allowing a maximum of three.
Chapter 4: Marketing and District Competition has ways of promoting the inn and tier 1-3 rivals and their details.
Chapter 5: Operational Narrative Fluff has descriptions for disastrous/slow months, average months and good/booming months.
Appendix: The Innkeeper’s Ledger Sheet has a template for running an inn.
Appendix A: Example of an upgrade or expansion: (The Red Axe Inn) has extensive details on starting and upgrading the inn, with all the necessary details.
The Innkeeper’s Ledger: Fantasy Business Operations in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.
To some degree, this turns running an inn into a mini-game; however, as it’s currently set up, characters would pretty much be spending their time running the inn, taking the game over. Either the inn also needs to have adventure hooks, so the actual running it is in the background, or rules need adding to allow hiring a manager.
