A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Terror on Texas 4

Terror on Texas 4 by Autumn Unwin is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use withMiskatonic Repository, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

The supplement is available as a 13 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and one the back matter.

Terror on Texas 4Keeper’s Notes explains this is for 2-5 investigators and intended to be a full session bottle episode. It starts as the investigators arrive on Texas 4.

Synopsis explains this is in the 1960s and the investigators are sent to Texas Tower 4, a remote radar facility in the Atlantic operated by the USAF.

Real History gives details on the Texas Towers, which were real and Texas Tower 4 was destroyed during a storm.

Background for the Keeper explains that TT4 was unwittingly built on the edge of a pre-human Deep One waystation and recent storms have cracked the foundations revealing evidence of this.

Beginning the Play has details on why the characters have been sent out, their arrival at the tower, points of interest and what can be found during investigation and what happens during the night.

The Descent has the characters heading into the depths in a diving bell to inspect the foundations, returning to find the tower has been replaced by a stone pyramid.

The Temple covers the pyramid, a ritual being performed and how the characters can disrupt it.

Appendix has monster and NPC stats.

Engineering Report is a report on the status of the tower.

Texas Tower 4 Layout has an overhead and side view of the tower.

Terror on Texas 4 in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. As well as the blueprint-style map, there are some black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

The adventure is essentially written as a one-shot. Disrupting the ritual leads to an explosion that’s highly likely to kill the characters; only at the Keeper’s discretion will they manage to escape. Perhaps because of this, there are no rewards for completing the adventure. Should the Keeper want to make this part of a campaign, some work will be needed to done to make the escape more than just at the Keeper’s whim as well as add rewards.
