Storm Warning

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Storm Warning

Storm Warning by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 31 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three pages are the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Storm WarningThe opening paragraphs explain that a sand storm on the Olonsean Empire prison planet Refaso in the Sonora Sector – the adventure is in the Frontiers of Space setting, though that isn’t explicitly stated. Signals from the desert were picked up after the storm ended and the characters are approached by a representative of the empire to investigate.

Conditions of Employment gives the payments that can be gained for various tasks.

Patron gives the details of the person that is employing the characters.

Complications are the various problems that the characters can encounter. For once, the patron isn’t withholding vital information.

Encounters in the Eastern Desert is a 2d6 table of encounters, including a new monster that sounds as if it came from Tatooine.

Desert Conditions are Harsh has some brief details on the environmental conditions.

The Great Pyramid of the Stritons is the main part of the adventure, and is a buried five-level pyramid that was recently unearthed and, if the characters don’t deal with it, a serious problem for the entire sector.

Bypassing Key Card Locks is how to use a skill to do this.

Mission Completion Requirements is what’s needed for it to be a success.

Striton Assault Team are the aliens that will come through a portal.

Storm Warning in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a single column black and white format and a few minor errors were noticed. Bar the cover, there are no illustrations, only some maps. Presentation is below average.

Perhaps the single biggest problem with this adventure could be if the characters fail; the Stritons are said to be more dangerous than any of the polities in Sonora and if they come through in force, the sector is doomed. If the characters fail and die, they won’t care. If they fail and survive, they have a problem. There’s also the peculiarity of Sonora’s tendency for single-use planets; there are more than a few planets that have one use and that’s it. Storm Warning is an okay adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
