Sir Reginald Lichlyter's Magical Beers, Tankards, & Other Inebrious Items

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Sir Reginald Lichlyter’s Magical Beers, Tankards, & Other Inebrious Items

Sir Reginald Lichlyter’s Magical Beers, Tankards, & Other Inebrious Items by Jeff Gomez is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a PDF for $2.99, as a softcover print on demand colour book for $10.97 or as both PDF and print on demand book for $11.97. The PDF is the version reviewed, although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. It has 32 pages with two being the front and rear covers, one the front matter, one the Contents and one the Open Game License.

Sir Reginald Lichlyter's Magical Beers, Tankards, & Other Inebrious ItemsThe first page of content is an in-character piece of fluff from Sir Reginald Lichlyter, which also explains that this is a companion piece to the Trusty Tavern Tome.

How to Get Drunk is rules on doing so that modify and clarify alcohol and getting drunk in the game. They are different to those in the Trusty Tavern Tome and the GameMastery Guide and provide an alternate look. They are more detailed and includes rules for hangovers and alcohol addiction.

Magical Beers explains these are potions that contain at least one drink of alcohol and should be treated as potions, though magical drinks can impose detriments as well as penalties and a drinker may choose to try to resist all magical effects, both positive and negative. A sidebar looks at how those with Profession (brewer) might create magical ales. Thirty-one magical drinks are then described in a standard magical item format with a variety of effects, including negating alcohol.

Magical Alcoholic Items has new items that get around the issue that a magical drink can only be drunk once. Fifteen of these are drinking containers of one kind or another and nine are other types of items. There are also three special abilities for arms and armour. All have a wide variety of powers.

Cursed Items has ten new cursed items related to alcohol.

Alchemical Items has six alcohol-related items that can be created with alchemy.

New Alcoholic Spells has fifteen new spells related to alcohol and drunkenness, from level 0 to level 5, though predominately at the lower end.

Sir Reginald Lichlyter’s Magical Beers, Tankards, & Other Inebrious Items in Review

The PDF is bookmarked, though not as thoroughly as it could be. The Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a handful of colour illustrations. Presentation is okay.

The supplement has a wealth of material related to alcohol and magic, allowing a GM to add quite a lot to a game if such is desired, though it’s a shame that there aren’t more medium level spells and some high-level ones too. GMs will need to check to see whether they want to add specific things to their campaign before doing so, but otherwise this is a good resource.
