Shrine of the Cabbage God

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Shrine of the Cabbage God

Shrine of the Cabbage God by Ben Gibson is a role playing game supplement published by Coldlight Press for use with B/X. The supplement is released under an inadequately described, and probably because of that worthless, Creative Commons license.

Shrine of the Cabbage GodThe supplement is available as a 12 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and one is an ad.

Adventure Introduction explains that this is a dungeon adventure for characters of levels 4-6 in which they explore the shrine to a long-forgotten god.

Adventure Background gives some details on the shrine to the petty-god of cabbages and the current plunderers of it.

Some notes for the Game Master explains how certain things are laid out.

Random Encounters explains how these happen.

Markos the Sly gives some details on the plunderer and his forces.

Hooks Leading to the Shrine has six adventure hooks.

The Offering Houses describes the external buildings.

Upper Level Key covers the upper level of the dungeon.

Lower Level covers, most of, the lower level of the dungeon.

Bestiary has the monsters and NPCs.

Shrine of the Cabbage God in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with some sections linked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a few stock colour illustrations as well as the maps. Presentation is okay.

The supplements formatting could have done with a bit of work; the upper and lower levels of the dungeon are separate areas, yet the numbering system continues from one level to the next, and there’s no clear demarcation; by the time the demarcation occurs, the new level has already started as one level blurs into the next, which is a detriment to use. The adventure itself is a straightforward enough adventure; go to a place and essentially loot it whilst dealing with those already doing so.
