Scratch Builder Monthly September 2023

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Scratch Builder Monthly September 2023

Scratch Builder Monthly September 2023 is a supplement written and published by MJ Hobby Corner for use with making cheap models, primarily for tabletop wargaming.

The supplement is available as a 55-page PDF from Wargame Vault for $3. One page is the front cover, one the Contents and one the credits.

Scratch Builder Monthly September 2023The first page of content is an introduction explaining what’s in this month’s issue.

Using Hero Scape Tiles in Solo RPG looks at Heroscape tiles with terrain boards, then has some details on creating a custom terrain tile that’s compatible with the Heroscape tiles, as well as photos of other examples, which could also be used as scatter.

Solo RPG Tools mentions hex flowers as a solo RPG resource.

On The Sculpting Bench covers sculpting an ammonite for Deep Wars, with a diagram of it, including painting, with a showcase of other Deep Wars creatures created.

Projects Of The Month starts with creating a transport ship for Five Parsecs From Home, primarily from cardboard, with the different steps covered, and some photos of it in use.

Working with Card board Star ships has a step-by-step process for building a starship mode almost totally from cardboard, though no sizes are given. There is also a set of cardboard templates for a ship laid out.

Home World Scratch Builds has photos of scratchbuilt starships for the system.

The final page of content is a thankyou page and what’s upcoming.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Contents covers the major sections, though not all sections and names don’t always match up with the actual supplement. Navigation is okay. The text follows a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of photos of projects in various stages of construction, as well as some plans of projects. Presentation is good.

This one has more projects that can be copied using the instructions, though some could have done with more detail on such as precise measurements. Still, it should be possible to create something similar. There is also some other material on gaming, as well as examples of finished projects that could be used for inspiration.
