Scratch Builder Monthly February 2023 is a supplement written and published by MJ Hobby Corner for use with making cheap models, primarily for tabletop wargaming.
The supplement is available as a 68-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99. One page is the front cover, one the table of contents and links, one is credits and one is ads.
The Introduction is the same as it has been for the previous issues and explains that this is a new publication will build on videos for projects. The following page has a list of what’s in the supplement and links.
The Sculpting Bench: Making Seth For A Game Themed Around The Gods of Egypt looks at creating figures for the game Of Gods & Mortals. There’s a general overview of the process, and a look at the campaign, but no specifics.
Use of Clay For Making Objective Markers and small scale terrain. looks at using different clays to make objective markers. Making an arch and some scrolls are covered.
WW2 Top downs, German Armor has a step-by-step process for making a top down of a German WW2 tank, primarily from cardboard.
Felt Hills… A Unique Way of Making Hills has a step-by-step process of making some hill scatter primarily using felt and some junk, with some alternative versions.
An Overview of A Clay Steam Walker has photos and descriptions of processes used to make a steam walker.
Making a War chariot for a 1/72 Scale army covers the steps used.
Diving into the Deep, with Deep Wars Scratch Builds in action shows using various scratch builds in Deep Wars.
Scratch built Show Case has some old examples as well as discussing the philosophy behind making terrain and upcoming content.
Scratch Builder Monthly February 2023 in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The table of contents covers the major sections. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and a variety of minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of photographs of tools, materials and projects in various stages of construction as well as finished. Presentation is good.
As is typical for the supplement series, there are a variety of different things covered. Some projects are covered in enough detail with a step-by-step process that they can be duplicated. Others just look at various stages, or what needs to be done; though not as useful as the step-by-step instructions, they do have material useful for inspiration.
