Scratch Builder Monthly August 2023

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Scratch Builder Monthly August 2023

Scratch Builder Monthly August 2023 is a supplement written and published by MJ Hobby Corner for use with making cheap models, primarily for tabletop wargaming.

The supplement is available as a 54-page PDF for $3 from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the Contents and one the credits and links.

Scratch Builder Monthly August 2023The Introduction looks at what’s in the issue.

Ask The Oracle: New Video Series goes through playing a solo game of EZD6 using oracles and terrain.

Magnetized Maps For Games looks at using maps via a magnetised white board, which the map is attached to with magnets, and more magnets with symbols representing various things.

Re-Visiting An Old Project: Home Brew Armies looks at building an army of giant insects, primarily ants, for gaming, going through the different steps.

Welcome To The Jungle looks at creating jungle terrain, a more detailed look at creating a giant land crustacean and some ideas for painting it, followed by a showcase of creatures.

Large Jungle Trees starts by looking at some general principles, then goes into more detail about creating a tangle tree, along with some general concepts related to scale, a showcase of tropical terrain, using some older projects and the idea of clip-on terrain as accessories, and finally preparing to game.

Foam APC explains that this was created during a video on the YouTube channel, working with both foam and wood for vehicles, instead of making everything with the same material, and showcases of different vehicles and future development.

Star Ship Updated: Beginning The Kushan Fleet looks briefly at starting a new fleet of ships.

Game Updates has details on various different games played.

Moving Forward looks at future projects.

Scratch Builder Monthly August 2023 in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Contents covers the major sections, though not all sections and names don’t always match up with those in the supplement. Navigation is okay. The text follows a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of photos of projects in various stages of construction and tolls used. Presentation is good.

More of this issue is devoted to actually playing games and recaps of these than to building than is usually the case. With the building, these range from brief overviews of ideas through more detailed examples through step-by-step instructions that could be copied, so the materials ranges from inspiration to instructional.
