People, Plots and Places of the Wild West: Riverboat

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement People, Plots and Places of the Wild West: Riverboat

People, Plots and Places of the Wild West: Riverboat by Nathanael Christen is a role playing game supplement published by Pinnacle Entertainment via the Savage Worlds Adventurer’s Guild for use with Savage Worlds.

The supplement is available as a six-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $0.50 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a bundle.

People, Plots and Places of the Wild West: RiverboatThe opening paragraph explains that riverboats were once an important way of transporting people and goods, especially prior to the railways. It then describes the locations on the accompanying maps of a riverboat.

Crew Stats has stats for various people who can be found crewing a boat.

Additional Gear looks at the other gear that the crew will have access to, from personal items to equipment and supplies required to do their job to rifles.

Waterways of the West accompanies a map showing the major waterways, which all feed into the Mississippi, and provide a network of water transport from the Rockies to the East Coast.

Steamboat Stats has stats for the riverboat mapped out.

Plot Hooks has a lot of adventure hooks related to the riverboat; a sidebar covers a famous wreck.

New Hazards has various different hazards that could be encountered on the rivers; another sidebar looks at steamboat races and judging them.

People, Plots and Places of the Wild West: Riverboat in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, has enough sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text is primarily two column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are some stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

Though this might initially look like just a description of a means of transport, it covers more than that. There are a host of adventure hooks, plus new rules for travelling on the waterways, making this a useful supplement for covering water transport during the period; it could even be used for other settings.
