A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement On Hostile Shores | A Call of the Sea Prologue

On Hostile Shores | A Call of the Sea Prologue by Carlos Ferrer is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

The supplement is available as a 20 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and four the front matter.

On Hostile Shores | A Call of the Sea PrologueA sidebar explains that this is a short adventure that can be played independently or as a prelude to Call of the Sea: The Everhart Expedition. It gives a brief summary of the events.

Background explains it’s 1930 in French Polynesia and a wealthy French family is returning to Tahiti after a holiday. Their yacht is hit by storms, the captain and another crew member are lost, the engine stops working and they are blown of course when they spy an island, which is the remains of Mu. The island is guarded by deep ones and there are six pre-generated characters.

The Attack happens after the current situation is explained to the players when the yacht has something collide with it, causing it to start sinking and a claw emerges from the water.

The Reefs looks at the dangers of getting through the reefs surrounding the island.

The Beach describes what’s found on the beach once landfall is made.

The Ruins has some ruins on the island and how to enter them.

The Return of Tikarei sees the creature that attacked the yacht return.

Conclusion has the characters escape the island, or start being affected by it.

Handouts has three pages of handouts.

Creatures has the single creature.

Investigators has the six pre-generated characters.

The PDF is bookmarked with the various sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a variety of colour illustrations up to full page in size. Presentation is good.

As it stands, if this isn’t being used as a prelude to Call of the Sea, it is probably best used as a one-shot. It would be difficult slotting other investigators into the adventure as it stands, given hoe it’s set up, and it’s a very linear adventure as well.
