Miskatonic Repository Watch-to-win Ads by Marek Golonka is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The supplement is available as a Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG and comes in two versions. The first is three pages long and one page is the front cover and around have the Credits. The second is missing the front cover and the page backgrounds, being a printer friendly version.
Watch and Win! explains this is an unserious addition allowing investigators to get in-game bonuses from watching ads, all of which will advertise products in the Miskatonic Repository, and it only makes sense in light or pulpy games.
How does it work? explains that it should only be used if everyone is fine with it. Investigators start with three ad slots per game and refill at the beginning of the next. Players can ask to be shown an ad when making a roll to gain a bonus. An optional rule allows investigators to get an ad slot when they’ve run out, but have to watch two ads.
For Keepers: choosing the adverts has tips on selecting products from the Miskatonic Repository and how to read an ad, with just reading the description being the easiest.
Outside the Repository explains this was created to advertise Miskatonic Repository supplements, and that it could be used to advertise such products in other games such as Monster of the Week, Brindlewood Bay or Mörk Borg.
Final word recommends the titles in the Miskatonic Repository.
Miskatonic Repository Watch-to-win Ads in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that they aren’t needed. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the cover, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.
This is what it looks to be; an optional addition for Call of Cthulhu that’s definitely not going to work in more serious games, but could be used to gain more awareness of supplements for the system. Miskatonic Repository Watch-to-win Ads can be found by clicking here.
