Infamy

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Infamy

Infamy by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 22 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

InfamyThe opening paragraphs explain that the characters are approached by a representative for an empire – the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space – which, in order to pursue expansionistic goals, needs to win a decisive victory against a rival polity. This will be done by attacking a naval base and the characters are asked to do some preparatory work for the attack.

Patron has details on the employer.

Complications are things that are not known or which can go wrong.

The Master Strategist has details on the person behind the plan.

Disavowal is the chance that the emperor will disavow the plan.

Encounters in the System are the chances ships will be encountered and what will be encountered.

Encounters on the Planet has those on the planet itself.

Encounters in Space Near the Naval Base has those close to the base itself.

The Planet has some brief details on this.

Planting the Device on the Planet looks at this part of the mission, including the locations in a scientific outpost and NPCs.

Placing the Mines looks at placing these in space.

The Naval Base explains that this isn’t mapped and how close the bomb needs to be.

Rysnian Troops Patrolling the Naval Base has a 2d6 table of these.

Security Bot has stats for this.

The Rysnian Fleet just lists the fleet’s ships.

The Battle is a battle between the employers and the target, depending on how much damage the characters did.

Completion is what the characters receive.

Aftermath is the chances that the interstellar police will get involved.

Possible Sector Wide War looks at potential implications.

The final page of content has a map of the outpost.

Infamy in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

With the NPCs, less stat blocks could have been used, which is a common problem. The adventure itself is a pretty unethical one for characters. If it succeeds, they will accomplish at least killing a lot of people and at most starting a sector war, and have the chance of it being known they are criminals. Most characters would be best off steering clear. Infamy can be found by clicking here.
