Gyllencreutz Myling

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gyllencreutz Myling

Gyllencreutz Myling by Matt Cantillon is a role playing game supplement published by Free League Publishing through the Free League Workshop Community Content Programme for use with Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying.

The supplement is available as a nine page Pay What You want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and one is some credits.

Gyllencreutz MylingOverview explains this adds a Myling to the Castle Gyllencreutz adventure as a secondary mystery, but is separate from the main one.

Introduction explains how Ulf had an affair with a woman called Helena, who had his child. She told no-one, and on having a chance of a new lie, she knew the child would prevent that and buried the body in the castle. She wrote a letter to Ulf, who eventually received it, but didn’t have time to act on it.

The Myling describes the vaesen and its behaviour, as well as the fact that it doesn’t interact with the will-o’-the-wisps. Sidebars cover signs of its presence and clues; there is a lot of overlap between the two.

Roland’s Account has him telling the characters what he knows, which isn’t everything.

Handout – The Letter in Ulf’s Coat is this.

Resolving the Myling has ways that it can be dealt with.

The Burial Scene has the myling’s remains being buried; a sidebar covers what happens if a character gave up their name, or if they didn’t.

Gyllencreutz Myling in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format, bar the handout, and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the cover, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

If this adventure has one problem, is that it doesn’t interact with the main one at all, and players, on finding there are two lots of vaesen in the castle, are unlikely to believe they aren’t connected in any way. The GM might need to make this more obvious, as it’s only obvious to the GM as written. It could perhaps be done afterwards, rather than as an attached adventure.
