Fog Valley Retreat

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Fog Valley Retreat

Fog Valley Retreat by Ben Gibson is a role playing game supplement published by Coldlight Press for use with OSRIC. The supplement is covered by a CC BY 4.0 License. This is an adventure for characters of levels 5-7.

The supplement is available as an eight page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers and one the front matter.

Fog Valley RetreatAdventure Site Introduction explains where the site is intended to be placed and that it assumes an escaping loose end may have headed to it, but a party could stumble onto it.

Site Background gives a brief history of the place, both what’s believed and what’s actually true.

Site Environment and Conditions gives details on the climate conditions and general features.

Some notes for the Game Master has notes on how this is put together, a d4 table of rumours and some random encounters.

A map of the retreat is then followed by location descriptions.

Before and After Retreat looks at the default setup, of characters chasing a villain, where the retreat is intended to be placed as well as adapting it to settings where elves aren’t like those in the retreat.

Conversion to 5E has some quick conversion notes for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

Fog Valley Retreat in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major sections linked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

A word on the license. An OSRIC adventure should be covered by the Open Game License, not CC BY 4.0, and the wording of the used license is missing some of the required details for that license. This may mean there is no actual license covering the supplement.

The adventure site itself should be reasonably easy to drop into settings, though various tweaks will need to be made, most likely to references to deities and possibly who runs the shrine, depending on the setting. It’s a fairly useful addition to a setting. Fog Valley Retreat can be found by clicking here.
