A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Ahnkar-Kosh, The Unstoppable (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Ahnkar-Kosh, The Unstoppable (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as an 11-page PDF for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two are ads.

Ahnkar-Kosh, The Unstoppable explains that the NPC is a bodyguard, and a legendary one at that, working in the Tarnished Souk of the Coliseum Morpheuon setting. It covers how Dreamburning in the setting works with Ahnkar-Kosh and how he may be encountered. A sidebar explains how, and how not, to use Ahnkar-Kosh.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Ahnkar-Kosh, The Unstoppable (PFRPG)Three different versions of Ahnkar-Kosh follow. The first is a CR 21 dreadnaught protector quickling manimal ankylosaurus armiger 8, a thoroughly complex creature with two pages of stats, a page of details on his magic items and references to four different templates, with protector being in the Book of Monster Templates. This is a being that is amongst the mightiest around.

The next is the CR 14 protector quickling manimal ankylosaurus fighter 5. Not as dangerous but still formidable.

Finally, there is the CR 7 manimal ankylosaurus. Compared to the others, a complete pushover.

Appendix: Templates has three new templates, Dreadnaught Creature, Quickling Creature and Manimal Creature, all of which can be used on other beings.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Ahnkar-Kosh, The Unstoppable (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is decently bookmarked with the major sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. The sole illustration is that on the cover, which may be custom. Presentation is okay.

This, like many of Rite’s creatures and NPCs, is a truly complex one that makes the most of a lot of Pathfinder’s options, then adds some more just for fun. Though requiring another book to find out more about the protector template is a bit annoying. Running the full CR 21 version, or even the comparatively minor CR 14 option, will not be easy. Both CRs have a lot of different abilities; the CR 21 uses five pages of this supplement alone, when the templates are considered It’s useful having an NPC at different levels, though the Coliseum Morpheuon is a powerful setting and, therefore, NPCs from it are equally powerful. Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Ahnkar-Kosh, The Unstoppable (PFRPG) is an interesting, albeit complicated, NPC and can be found by clicking here.
