Adventures in Wonderland Chapter 1: Chasing the White Rabbit

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Adventures in Wonderland Chapter 1: Chasing the White Rabbit

Adventures in Wonderland Chapter 1: Chasing the White Rabbit by J Gray is a role playing game supplement published by Playground Adventures for use with Hero Kids. This is the first adventure in a mini adventure path for children, and is also available for Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

This is a 17 page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a discounted price during a sale. One page is the front cover, one the Credits and one an ad.

Adventures in Wonderland Chapter 1: Chasing the White RabbitIt starts off saying that the adventurers are doing nothing when they encounter a strange, teleporting white rabbit. A sidebar states that even though it is intended to be played as part of a series, it can work as a standalone adventure or could be used with another adventure entirely, with A Friend in Need suggested.

The characters are suggested to be starting adventurers who know each other but have only just begun.

On encountering the White Rabbit, the heroes will follow him through the wood. A full page is taken up by a map of the wood. Another sidebar states that this part intentionally resembles a board game, so that it is easier to use with children new to RPGs. There are a variety of challenges that have to be done on the board, all by rolling dice with a few optional combats (it’s a shame there isn’t an option for more complicated challenges, but such could be added by the GM).

The first character to reach the finish gets an item, then the characters have to rescue the White Rabbit from an aggressive tree, and they will get another item, one needed in the next part of the adventure, Down the Rabbit Hole.

Six pages have the colour board to print out for the forest portion and the final page has monster cards and miniatures for the White Rabbit and the Tangleme Tree.

Adventures in Wonderland Chapter 1: Chasing the White Rabbit in Review

The PDF is bookmarked but some of the bookmarks lead to the wrong places. It’s comparatively short, so bookmarks are not essential, but navigation could be better. The text maintains a two column full colour layout and appeared to be free of errors. There are custom full colour illustrations, including the game board (which looks gorgeous but is perhaps not going to be the easiest thing to print). Presentation is exceptionally good for a supplement of this size.

This module will, as it states, work by itself, but it will be better to do it as the start of the mini adventure path. It’s a very nice little adventure and it should work well as an introductory adventure for children unfamiliar with RPGs. Some puzzle alternatives to rolling dice for the challenges would, as mentioned, be good, but the GM could find those. Rolling dice works best for younger children, but some interesting puzzles would be good for older ones. Other than that, this is an excellent, well-presented little module. Adventures in Wonderland Chapter 1: Chasing the White Rabbit is definitely recommended and it can be found by clicking here.
