A Delicate Matter

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement A Delicate Matter

A Delicate Matter by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 20 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three are the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The opening paragraphs explain that the characters are approached in a star port by a government official. The heir to the throne died in embarrassing circumstances and they want the body returned and the matter completely covered up. Though not stated, this is in the Frontiers of Space setting.

A Delicate MatterThe Patron gives the employer’s stats.

Complications are the various things that can go wrong.

The Prostitute is the person who was with the heir when he died.

Her Third Party Contact to the Travellers is as it states.

Street Thugs Who Will Aid Emma Diaz are stats for the muscle she can call on.

Key to the House of Pleasure details the various locations in the brothel where the incident happened.

Muscle is the brothel’s muscle.

Roster of the Patrons of the House of Pleasure are stats for customers.

The Royal Guard (Protecting the Room with the Body) are stats for them.

Discovery by Reporters are the chances reporters might find out what happened.

Requirements for Success are what’s needed to complete the mission.

The final page of content is a map of the brothel.

A Delicate Matter in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the covers and black and white map, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This adventure is a bit, well, dubious. The planet the heir died on is a pleasure planet. Not uncommon in fiction. They died in a brothel. Not uncommon in real life. The fact that every establishment on the planet is a brothel staffed by female prostitutes and all the customers are male… is, well. Hmm. There’s also the fact that success requires word not get out. This might require killing reporters, the prostitute and their muscle. Not good. Almost certainly, the adventure should not be run on a brothel world (and there was no need for that in the first place). In addition, it will need further tweaking. A Delicate Matter truthfully cannot be recommended but it can be found by clicking here.
