Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Yin Yang Panda – The Rise of Serpent

Yin Yang Panda – The Rise of Serpent by Łukasz Kołodziej is a free role playing game supplement published by Skavenloft. This is a supplement for Yin Yang Panda, which is based on Lasers & Feelings and is covered by the CC BY 4.0 license.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Table of Contents.

Yin Yang Panda - The Rise of SerpentThe Introduction explains that this is a splatbook for the game that contains information on the Serpent Gang, a bandit group roaming the Dragonfly Empire.

How to Use This is a standard section explaining what is needed, which is the standard gaming material, this and the core book.

The Serpent Gang explains that the Dragonfly Empire is troubled by many gangs, but the serpent gang is the worst, as they are well-organised and have access to a network of hideouts and access to equipment. Though the gang boss was recently captured, a new one promptly appeared. There are a couple of tables on who the gang messed with and who helps them.

Members explains that the gang has about 500 members, all snakes, and most are minor thugs, but a few characters stand out. Six of these are then detailed, with names, backgrounds, goals, signature weapons, powers, weaknesses and mysteries.

Equipment has a list of various items of equipment that the gang uses, together with some more mysteries.

Hideouts lists three types of hideouts used by the gang and some mysteries.

Tactics has how the gang performs typical village and caravan raids, together with mysteries.

Items of Interest has six items that the gang is after, one from Artifacts of the Empire and the others briefly described; the GM can decide what the status of any of these item acquisitions is.

Partners has six potential helpers for the gang.

Yin Yang Panda – The Rise of Serpent in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though comparatively short, has enough sections that these would have been useful. The Table of Contents covers the major sections. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This splatbook describes a potentially major foe organisation, with various ways that characters could end up interacting with them, in moderate detail, though as always there’s room for more expansion. Yin Yang Panda – The Rise of Serpent is a decent little supplement and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
