Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Yin Yang Panda – Spirit Realm

Yin Yang Panda – Spirit Realm by Łukasz Kołodziej is a free role playing game supplement published by Skavenloft. This is a supplement for Yin Yang Panda, which is based on Lasers & Feelings and is covered by the CC BY 4.0 license.

The supplement is available as a 16-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one page is the front matter and one the Table of Contents.

The Introduction explains that this is a splatbook for Ying Yang Panda and has information on the Spirit Realm.

How To Use this explains that you need the core book, the standard items listed in that and that Cicada Principality is useful.

We Have Guests! has details for adding a splash of the Spirit Realm to the Dragonfly Empire.

We Are Guests is similar, but it’s for adding a touch of the Dragonfly Empire to the Spirit Realm.

The Spirit Realm gives some details on this place, which is like the material world, but better. Most inhabitants also become better over time, but a fraction who are already evil and corrupt instead become worse.

Spiritual Creatures looks at the different kinds of inhabitants; spirits of the dead, mythical creatures and deities.

Landscape explains that the Spirit Realm is infinitely varied.

Culture explains that every imaginable culture can be found in the Spirit Realm.

Martial Arts explains that every martial art invented is practiced in the Spirit Realm, but the most important the Spirit Style, possibly the first step on the path to becoming a deity.

Playing Aids has d12 tables of names and surnames, d6 tables of places to visit, spirits to meet and spirits to avoid, a d12 table of treats to try and a d6 table of weapons to master.

Playing a Spirit Character explains this type of character can be chosen during creation.

Spirit gives details on spirit characters, which in the material world need a vessel in order to interact with the world.

Yin Yang Panda – Spirit Realm in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, despite being comparatively short, these would have been appreciated. The Table of Contents covers the major sections. Navigation is adequate. The text follows a single column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are simple weapon silhouettes and a single colour illustration. Presentation is okay.

This supplement expands the setting, adding the Spirit Realm, expands character options, with a new character type, martial art and weapons, and adds some new artefacts, that can be used as adventure hooks, making it a useful little supplement.
