Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Yin Yang Panda – Heart of the Giangce

Yin Yang Panda – Heart of the Giangce by Łukasz Kołodziej is a free role playing game supplement published by Skavenloft. This is a supplement for Yin Yang Panda, which is based on Lasers & Feelings and is covered by the CC BY 4.0 license.

The supplement is available as a 15-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Table of Contents.

Yin Yang Panda - Heart of the GiangceThe Introduction explains that this is a splatbook for the game which contains basic information about the village of Giang, from which springs the largest river in the Dragonfly Empire, the Giangce.

How to Use This is a standard section explaining what is needed, which is the standard gaming material, this and the core book. It also explains that the players will first need to be informed that the village exists.

The Journey contains a series of tables with five results for developing the journey. They cover how long it was, transport used, people met, things found and obstacles overcome.

The Village is another series of tables with five results, covering first impression, location, appearance, fortifications and whether it stands out.

The Folks is another series of tables with five results, this time covering dominant species, who’s influential, how the villagers differ from the rest of the empire, how they react to the characters’ arrival and what problems they are struggling with. This section also suggests using One Hundred Simple Things as a resource for simple folks.

The Secrets states the village hides a special secret, or possibly several. Some examples are given and the Scroll of the Seven Masters and Artifacts of the Empire supplements are recommended as they contain ideas for magical treasures.

The Danger is a series of tables with five results to determine who the villain is, why they want the village’s secret, their greatest asset, their greatest weakness and their plan. Warlords & Warlocks and The Rise of Serpent are suggested, as they contain antagonists.

Bits and Bobs are a few other unrelated suggestions to keep things moving.

Yin Yang Panda – Heart of the Giangce in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though comparatively short, has enough sections that these would have been useful. The Table of Contents covers the major sections. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This is a splatbook, but one that covers a small region, a village, rather than a larger one. The village could probably be considered to be an adventure location. It can also be used to tie together details from various other supplements. It is a bit strange that all the tables have five results, bot 6, given the game uses d6s. Yin Yang Panda – Heart of the Giangce has a decent collection of things for setting up the location and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
