Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Weekly Wonders – The Colonel

Weekly Wonders – The Colonel by Alex Riggs and Joshua Zaback is a free role playing game supplement published by Necromancers of the Northwest for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a new character class published for April Fool’s Day 2018.

This is a ten page PDF which is available for free from RPGNow. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

It starts with the Introduction which gives the concept behind this. Another company had released a Pathfinder-compatible class as an advertising campaign, one that promoted their brand (it isn’t specified what the company or product is, but it would certainly appear to be Old Spice‘s The Gentleman class). The class wasn’t that usable at the table, so Necromancers decided to make their own class which didn’t take itself too seriously but would actually work as a playable class. This one is also based around a brand, but not Necromancers own, nor is it official – the front matter states “This product is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by any purveyors of fried chicken.”

Weekly Wonders - The ColonelSo, what is The Colonel? It is a 20 level character class based heavily around cooking, and cooked chicken at that. The Colonel wears an immaculate white suit, which has various class-given properties, and a Western bolo tie (in case you haven’t guessed by now, the brand is KFC).

The Colonel is heavily into cooking and can prepare dishes in a similar manner to alchemists preparing infusions. This is definitely not a front-line class, but it actually looks like a useful support class. The dishes prepared can be used by other characters, who will gain effects unless the range is personal. There are a whole bunch of class features based around cooking, plus bonuses related to fighting birds – a natural enemy of the Colonel – and interaction with others.

The PDF is bookmarked, but not to any great level. Navigation is not brilliant, but this is a short PDF. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. There are three photos, two of a distinguished-looking older gentleman in a white suit and one of fried chicken.

This does actually look like a viable class, although that can’t be determined for certain without playtesting it. It is probably most suited to a lighter setting than a darker, more serious one. Weekly Wonders – The Colonel can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
