Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: The Gift That Keeps On Giving! A Vector! Attack of the Metapirates Adventure

The Gift That Keeps On Giving! A Vector! Attack of the Metapirates Adventure by Shane Wheeler is a role playing game supplement published by Mother Multiverse Media. This is a generic adventure.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a free 7-page PDF. One page is the front cover.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving! A Vector! Attack of the Metapirates AdventureVector Adventures explains that these adventures are setting and system agnostic and usually start with the arrival of Captain Vector and his ship. Vector has some commonalities in every appearance; he’s a pirate, he wears red and he’s fully aware that he is an NPC.

Special Rules has rules for this adventure, which are all Christmas themed. The adventure also lasts for an hour, measured by playing one hour of Christmas tunes.

The adventure itself starts with it snowing, no matter what the environment, and then Vector Claus arrives. Vector speaks in rhyme, and some sample answers to questions are given in rhyme. The characters must assault a tree, defeat various minions and a bad guy and finally the gift itself. Every creature is Christmas-themed, with the addition of Christmas powers and weaknesses.

The final page is mostly an ad, but also has a new meta-dimensional item, an Ugly Holiday Sweater. Meta-dimensional items are owned by players, not characters, and can transit between Vector adventures.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that they are not needed. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single illustration, on the front cover. Presentation is adequate.

The adventure is described as being setting and system agnostic and this is meant quite literally; it can be used in fantasy, science fiction, cyberpunk, horror etc. In each case it uses an element of metagaming in order to run it. Whether a GM, or their players, will want to add such a metagaming element to a regular campaign is a different question; it could be used as a standalone adventure but isn’t really intended as such. The adventure would perhaps make an unusual break from the norm, but it’s hard to see whether a whole series of adventures like this would appeal. The Gift That Keeps On Giving! A Vector!
