Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Ingredient: The Dig Deep Tavern

Ingredient: The Dig Deep Tavern by Michael Startzman is a role playing game supplement published by BattleSauce for use with the BattleSauce system. This is intended to be used as a supplement for the adventure Shadow of the Dragon. There is a longer version available for Patreon supporters.

The supplement is available as a seven-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers.

Ingredient: The Dig Deep TavernThe first page of content has a white on red map of the tavern’s ground floor with some brief details on it.

Next is How to Use this Ingredient, which explains that it is a site in Shadow of the Dragon but can be used for any adventure that characters undertake in the woods and mountains outside Undath. In Shadow of the Dragon, the characters don’t interact with the proprietor. This supplement allows more adventure options and the maps could also be used as game boards for BattleSauce shorts.

Next is a map of the surrounding area showing where the tavern is located.

This is followed by a full-colour map of the tavern’s ground floor with a brief overview of the place.

Hule Gage is the tavern’s owner and he is described together with his BattleSauce stats.

Ingredient: The Dig Deep Tavern in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these aren’t needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. Apart from the maps, which are done quite nicely, there is a single illustration, a rather weird one of the NPC. Presentation is decent, though the full colour backgrounds will make this a nightmare to print out.

The supplement may be written for a specific adventure, but as mentioned it’s stated it could be used for other BattleSauce adventures or shorts. Outside of that, it has little use, though the colour tavern map is worth getting the supplement for, as maps are always useful and the supplement is free.
