Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: HOF7 – “The Pistris”

HOF7 – “The Pistris” by Frank Schmidt is a role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar. The supplement is effectively aimed at Dungeons & Dragons variants.

The supplement is available as a six-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

HOF7 - "The Pistris"“The Pistris” explains that this is a standard vessel used by the Tortle Navy in the Pliem Bye region of Margou, part of the Filbar setting. It gives a description of the ship, which has an upper hull and sounds to generally resemble a turtle, and some of its features, as well as the standard crew. The Pistris is a warship designed for troop insertion onto hostile shores. The general construction of the ship and how the crew handles it in combat are also covered.

Following on from this is a description of the various locations on the vessel, as well as items that could be found and the various important NPCs, the various officers of the ship with their names and brief descriptions.

The final page of content has a map of the ship.

HOF7 – “The Pistris” in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, given its length and organisation, this is okay. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. The cover has a stock illustration and there’s the map; other than that, there are page backgrounds. Presentation is okay.

What this supplement describes is a ship, though one perhaps a bit more advanced than the standard ones, albeit not magical in nature. There are no game stats, which means it can easily be used with other systems. It might be associated with the tortles of Filbar, but it could be just as easily be used with other settings, as long as there are shipbuilders who are willing to be inspired by turtles when it comes to designing ships. HOF7 – “The Pistris” is a decent little supplement and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
