Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Hal21 – Fabian’s Flute

Hal21 – Fabian’s Flute by Frank Schmidt is a free role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar. This is an adventure intended for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available as a ten-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

Hal21 - Fabian's FluteFabian’s Flute starts with the Player’s Background, which explains that there is an extermination job not far from the inn where they are staying. The DM Background explains that this is a low-level scenario originally created for a podcast as a one-shot, but can be used as a starter or part of a larger campaign. It gives some history on what happened at the building the characters visit.

Background gives the details on what the characters will need to deal with.

Foreman Meeting is what the players discover; an old house is slated for demolition but is apparently haunted. The characters are asked to deal with the haunting.

The rest of the supplement covers the haunted house, complete with the floor plan. There are nine locations in the house, some with undead, and the main spirit with which the characters will need to deal, by finding the titular flute.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is probably short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and the main error seen was that, though the instrument is initially referred to as a flute, it is later called a horn; a rather different instrument. Bar the map, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This is a pretty short, simple adventure, in a single, self-contained location, though the GM will need to determine what level it’s suited for. The stats for the monsters given are pretty simple; simpler than would be expected for 5E play, giving this a bit of a feeling of being a hybrid between 5E and older versions.
